2009 Show - 12/28/09

All songs that came out in the year 2009 but don't hold that against them. Somehow, the heart of post-punk is still beating. New bands are keeping it alive and older bands are becoming rejuvenated and surely this can't last forever so re-catch the wave while you can.

Rockin' Post-Punk Show - 11/16/09

While it all falls under rock's nebulous musical umbrella, post-punk music is not know for really "rocking" in any conventional sense. Or is it? No, it isn't but there are more than a few post-punk, punk, new wave, and alternative tracks that I suspect do, in fact, rock. Tonight I played more than a few of those more than a few.

Old New York Show - 10/5/09

New York, the city so nice, they made up some little rhyme about it. Although maybe not surprisingly, it was during the city's low point that some of the best music to ever come out of any city came out. Starting with the Velvet Underground and continuing through the CBGB's scene in the late 70's, New York is the birthplace of punk and post-punk music as well as the next phase in counterculture, post-hippie. Tonight I played songs from that timeline and just for kicks, recorded the whole thing. You can download it below.

The Rarer Bands of Post-Punk Show - Part 2 - 9/14/09

As Butch Cassidy once said to Colonel Sanders, "I am too drunk to taste this chicken." Or wait, it's "Who are these guys?" Maybe that was to The Sundance Kid. Or maybe he said the chicken thing to him. I honestly don't remember. Was that movie really that good? I don't remember that either. But that kind of factors into my show for this night. It was about the bands and artists we don't remember. Maybe the bands and artists we had never heard of. But a jam playing in the middle of nowhere is indeed a jam and I think the tracks below were all jams, even if forgotten ones.

Jazz Influence Show - 8/31/09

Yes, jazz. While not thought of as a post-punk influencer and rightly not thought of so, a fair amount of post-punk artists, at least at one point in their careers, decided to go a little jazz on us. And why not? It's cool, it's atmospheric and it's exempt from scrutiny. Hopefully this show was also those things too. Download it below and find out!

Backup Vocals/Overdub Show - 8/17/09

What I would consider to be many fine examples of backup singing or the use of vocal overdub from the post-punk era or at least, post-mid 70s era. And why I consider that to be a BIG DEAL and why hopefully everyone else should too. Then throw in a little personal, romantic woolgathering and that was my show tonight. Here's the link to listen to it. Well not here, below:

8/10 Show Pre-empted By "No Reservations"

That's right, our very own Pirate Cat Radio Cafe is going to be featured on the Travel Channel show, "No Reservations" with that Anthony Bourdain dude. I believe he is going to drink our Maple Bacon Latte and we're having a viewing party to celebrate this during my normal shift. I'll be back next week unless someone puts us on another show.

Martin Hannett Show - 7/20/09

Martin Hannett, one of the unsung heroes of post-punk I wanted to sing about but to spare you all the displeasure of hearing me sing, I dedicated a radio show to him instead. He was a demanding, willful producer that worked with a lot of the great bands. More importantly though, he helped create the blueprint for the entire genre in terms of sound and tone and feel. Tonight's show was all about those sounds and tones and feels.

Drums Show - 7/13/09

Generally, my favorite beatzz and drum sounds from the post-punk era. And like just about everything else, my genre of choice features some of the most interesting, unconventional percussion out there. If you like that kind of stuff, than this is the show for you. If not, well then to hell with ya'.

Gay Show - 7/6/09

In honor of Gay Pride Weekend, which was over a week ago, I played all bands with a gay artist or artists or possibly bisexual or in one case, transgendered or in another case, transsexual. These were certainly some important people to the punk/post-punk/new wave/alternative genre but really it is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of music and the tip of Mt. Everest when it comes to entertainment as a whole. As I said several times on the show and now once on this blog, queer peoples' contribution to the arts is something to be truly admired and respected. That was what I tried to do this evening with the show:

Virgin Records Show - 6/22/09

While other major record companies had some post-punk and new wave artists signed to their labels, Virgin was really the only one dedicated to the genre. And by doing so, they were able to build a giant corporate empire. Of course there will always be Johnny Haterz out there who are against anything big and corporate but when it comes to Virgin, that is the incorrect opinion to have. Sir Richard Branson, Nik Powell, and Simon Draper, who founded the label, did things the right way and deserve a ton of credit for growing the post-punk/new wave sound and bringing it to our ears. This is their story!

PS. I didn't play Devo even though they were distributed by Virgin in the UK. The band had verbally committed to both Warner Brothers and Virgin (while stoned in Jamaica) and so the courts had decided that Warner Brothers would distribute them in the US and Virgin in the UK. I guess I just figured being in the US myself, it would be wrong to think that but as I type this, I realize that was stupid. Still a fine collection of songs though.

Misses 2009 Show - 6/1/09

A little less than a year ago, I returned to the radio with Post-Punk For Post-Punks and a dream. A dream of a free Tibet. Quickly I realized that I needed a new dream so it became instead, doing a weekly radio program in which each week I played only music that fell under a particular theme. I don't always play all the songs I want to play, I just run out of time like any normal person does but tonight's show, I took the opportunity to recap the past year a little bit and play one song from most every theme that I wish I would have played. Of course as always, you can just ignore the above paragraph and listen to a fine mix of songs. Here is the link for said songs:

Late 70s Power Pop Show - US and UK - 5/4/09

Not quite punk rock, not quite rock rock, and definitely not butter, an interesting brand of fun-oriented guitar pop found its way into my heart and tonight was about that very sound. I spent the first hour in America, the next hour in Great Britain, and both of them delightfully drunk. Here is the link to all of those things and more:

Happy Show! - 4/27/09

People often ask me, "Alex, why are you so psyched all the time?" Well it's simple, my friends, I listen to music that makes me psyched. And I listen to it all the time. And I don't just listen. I live it, man. I don't even know what that means but I live it anyway. I put live in italics. Fuck, I might as well put everything in italics. That is how you stay psyched all the time. Tonight I played songs that can help you too be this psyched, while still maintaining your dignity.

Big songs are simply songs that just feel big. And not even just big, larger than life sometimes. Golden Throats of Post-Punk Show - 3/9/09

The singers of post-punk are the best singers in the world, bar none. Don't believe that good singing has to be a certain way, hitting certain notes, and caterwauling with certain divas on VH1. Singing is about creating a character to your music, something completely unique and distinct but still something people can relate to. That's what post-punk and new wave bands did so well. They'll never get the credit they deserve but they did get a show dedicated to them. Download it yourself from:

Shoegaze Show - 3/2/09

Descending from C-86 and bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain and Cocteau Twins, Shoegaze took noise and psychedelia to beautiful new places. Last night I visited some of those places and played all shoegaze music, both from the original scene (late 80s/early 90s) and the more modern day. As the rhyme goes, download the show by following the link below:

Ohs, Whoas, and Oohs Show - 2/2/09

The second best 3 words in the English language and some of the greatest utensils in rock 'n' roll's awesome set of tools. Ohs, whoas, and oohs are like putting bacon on a song and if it's already got bacon on it, like Applewood-smoked cocaine bacon. Have a listen to what I believe are the finest songs ever to "Oh" by following this link below, which in this case is almost like a sausage link:

American Alternative 80s Show - 1/26/09

The underground music of the 80's that would eventually define the 90's, that was what my show featured on this very night. Back then, the world for me was divided into 2 kinds of people: people that liked the kind of music I played for this show and people I didn't like. Used to be you could really tell a lot about someone by what they listened to but that doesn't seem as true any more. Or maybe I was just less tolerant in my younger age. In any case, you can download the show from this link:

C-86 Show - The Mix Tape That Started the Genre - 1/19/09

In 1986, British weekly music publication, New Music Express, released a mail-order mix tape sampler called C-86 featuring 22 fairly new bands that represented a new direction and scene for independent music. While some people, including the NME itself, may dispute how much of a real direction and scene there really was at the release of C-86, it's hard to dispute that this cassette completely changed the face of music in Britain, both right away and in the future. My show tonight was all about the C-86 sound, featuring most of the bands from the original cassette as well as followers and influencees of the movement. Check it out by following the link:
