Old Bands, New Albums - 5/8/15

It usually doesn't bode well when a band or artist, long past their prime, decides to come back and try to recapture some of that former glory from their respective heyday. But post punk was always ahead of its time so when the world finally caught up, many a PP veteran found they still had something meaningful to contribute. Tonight's show was centered around those veteran, classic bands, all of whom released new albums in past 5 years or so and featuring tracks from said new albums.

Tracks that for the most part, were all pleasant surprises to me. Genuinely good songs from people who I didn't think still had it in them. A pleasantly surprising amount of people too. The Psychedelic Sounds of Post Punk - 4/24/15

Despite the completely understandable desire to rebel against 60s counterculture, psychedelic music still had a major effect on post punk and influenced many of your favorite such bands, though perhaps surprisingly, not so much the Psychedelic Furs. Several sub-genres (Paisley Underground, Shoegaze, Madchester) even splintered off  and embraced the psychedelic sounds of old while other factions simply took the ideals of psychedelia and placed them in a post punk context.

And I for one am glad they did because no matter what preconceived notions one may have about psychedelic music, I think it's hard to deny that it makes the world a more magical place. Siouxsie and the Banshees' Album, "Kaleidoscope" - 4/10/15

A turning point for both Siouxsie and the Banshees as well as yours truly. With still very little relative musical experience, the punk scene from which they came long since gone, lacking any established creative road map to follow, and half the band having just quit, Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Severin crafted an album unlike anything ever made before or since.

It is most likely my favorite LP of all time and I decided to dedicate a show entirely to my love for it, chronicling how the band managed to get there and where they went afterwards. I don't know if I did the best job explaining how this music makes me feel but I suppose that is kind of the beauty of Kaleidoscope. It just invokes something within me that goes beyond my ability to express. Think that sounds cheesy? The Oi! Show - 3/27/15

Sometimes called street punk, sometimes called a sling blade, Oi! approached the punk ideology and core values more literally than many of its sub-genre contemporaries. While the Oi! scene has endured a lot of public misperception and the generally limited interest in punk rock, it has continued to stay strong and tightly knit throughout the years. Plenty of original bands still play and plenty of new ones continue to form. In fact, I really came nowhere close to capturing the entirety of the Oi! sound. I just tried to represent some of the classics and some of what I personally happen to like.

The UK Punk Explosion - 3/13/15

I guess I could have called it "UK Punk Scene" or "UK Punk Movement" but sometimes things (and people) just explode. And if any music scene exploded, it probably would have been that initial wave of punk bands over in the UK during the mid-70s. Great Britain was by not so great anymore, young people were pissed, and rock 'n' roll was no longer the voice of social change and revolution. Then came the Sex Pistols and shortly thereafter, explosion. Fashion, culture, music, art as we know it - none of these things would ever be the same again.

Pub Rock - 2/27/15

Pubs give us plenty of good things - alcohol, sports on the television, a place to go and sit for awhile, sometimes food - and in the early 70s, pubs around London gave us an extremely short-lived, small-but-influential music scene, which was very much a precursor to the punk movement that would immediately follow. Plenty of future punks and post punks got their start in this little scene and some of the music was pretty good too.

The Theatre! - 2/13/15

While normally I hate it when someone spells theater as "theatre", I think it kind of applies in this case. Because tonight's episode was all about being over-the-top, dramatic, cinematic, and even pretentious. Like something you would see/hear in the theater from people who call it the "theatre".

But instead of that being annoying, it's actually kind of awesome. One of the many things I love about post punk is that there is often a such a high level of artistic commitment. People aren't necessarily trying to hang back and be cool, they go all-in, unafraid to look silly even when they do in fact look quite silly. New Wave Goes Commercial - 1/30/15

The year was 19-Early 80-Something and after several years of living underground here in America, the punk/post punk/new wave movement suddenly broke through to the mainstream. At least, a little bit. We started to appreciate some of the weirder, less conventional bands from the counterculture and they had a brand new medium in which to reach different audiences (MTV).

Now of course post punk as a whole nor even all of what could be considered new wave found total acceptance over here but this was about as close as we ever came and just enough for a young kid like me growing up at that time to find his true musical calling. New Year, New Zealand - 1/16/15

What better country to ring in the new year with than New Zealand? New Guinea? New Mexico? Those aren't even countries! Well, maybe New Guinea is but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that New Zealand's post punk contributions are underrated at best. It's pretty damn far away and before the internet and Lord of the Rings, most people didn't have any idea what was going on down there. Oddly enough, in the 80s, it seems like the vast majority of kiwi bands had a post punk/alternative kind of sound and there's something to be said for that.

It's Christmastime, and there's no need to be afraid. At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade. Those lyrics sang by Band Aid some 30 years ago and then by some new version of it now have never been more true nor ridiculous. Dia de los Muertos Show 2014 - Ramones R.I.P. - 11/1/14

In a year where the last of the original 4 Ramones, Tommy, passed away, I thought it would be nice to celebrate the accomplishments of one of the great bands of all time - punk, post punk, rock and roll, or otherwise. And it was nice. Like I say in the podcast, it can be easy to take someone like the Ramones for granted. Their image, their music, their whole overall zeitgeist is so embedded into our culture that some of us, me at least, often almost forget just how great and influential they really were. So playing and talking about the songs that span their entire, impressive career kind of gave me a slightly new perspective on things and I hope it does for you too. Spooooky Show 2014 - The History of Spooky Music - 10/22/14

This year I decided to take a trip back to the past (as opposed to the future) in an effort to chronicle some of the history of spooooky music and its effect on post punk. Then I went forward in time (but still in the past) to the post punk era, followed by the subgenres it spawned like goth and horror punk, leading into dark electro for a minute, then leading into the more modern retro (ironic?) sound, which sometimes brings back some of post punk's spooookier qualities. Then I don't know what happens.

Weird Songs of Post Punk - 10/9/14

Did you know it's also National Weird Song Day? Well, it actually isn't but I believe it is Independence Day for the nation of Uganda and that's pretty much the same thing. Therefore, I have decided to celebrate by playing what I consider to be some of the weirder tracks of post punk.

But not necessarily weird as in weird-in-general, more like weird as it relates to each band. Things like the Police suddenly breaking from song to read a poem about a blow-up sex doll, Gary Numan performing a jingle for 7-Up, Morrissey sounding downright happy, the Thompson Twins sounding downright punky, and Xymox hopelessly adrift a sea of early 90s ecstasy.

One Hit Wonders of Post Punk - 9/25/14

Did you know it's National One Hit Wonder Day? Of course not, what kind of crazy person just walks around with information like that? But technically, it really is such a day and I thought I would celebrate by doing a show dedicated to the one hit wonders of post punk.

While maybe to the uninitiated, groups like Soft Cell, Big Country, Wall of Voodoo, Gary Numan, and even Devo could be considered one-hit wonders but of course, if you listen to the podcast or just any of those bands, you probably know otherwise. This episode focused on the true one-hit wonders within our genre. People who really only gave us one signature track by which to remember them by. Whether it be a technical hit or just well-known classic amongst us fans. Of course this all certainly falls into subjective territory too but hopefully, you can trust my judgment here. If not though, you’ll probably still like the music.

Martin Rushent - Legendary Post Punk Producer - 9/12/14

He's best known as the producer who helped resurrect the Human League for the landmark Dare album but Martin Rushent is also the man behind The Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Altered Images, and other post punk groups looking for a big, more accessible record, all without compromising their artistic integrity.

Scotland in the 1980s (and I suppose, the late 70s as well) - 8/29/14

I said it before on this show in general, several times during this particular episode, on blogs, in conversations, under my breath, internal monologues, etc. and I'm going to say it again right now - Scotland is a relatively small country which has produced a relatively large amount of important post punk and alternative music, especially during the decade that we like to call the 1980s.

There were heavyweights (Simple Minds, Big Country, Cocteau Twins, Jesus and Mary Chain), up-and-comers who would go onto making their biggest splash in the next decade (Primal Scream, Soup Dragons, Del Amitri), cultish bands who were highly influential (Orange Juice, Josef K, Vaselines, Aztec Camera), and even plenty of other great groups who never quite made it but maybe should have (The Headboys, Zones, The Jolt) and more!

I could have gone on and on but for brevity's sake, I kept the episode just under 2 hours. I also recorded all my commentary in stopped traffic so please excuse the open air sound. To try and cover this up, I added some accompanying background bagpipe music to these segments. There's another great musical contributions we can thank Scotland for:  Bagpipes. Does anyone else play bagpipes? Who cares? Because no one else plays bagpipes like the Scots and very few nations play post punk like they do either.

Post Punk Goes Surfing - 8/15/14

After a long winter's nap, this podcast has re-emerged, just in time for summer to be over. And what better way to say goodbye to summer than with an episode dedicated entirely to the effect of surf music on punk, post punk, new wave, etc.? According to all my books on saying goodbye to summer, nothing.

It should come as no surprise that Blondie, the Ramones, and the Cramps - bands with such a heavy early 60s influence already - might incorporate some of the classic surf sound into their music but what about people like the Love & Rockets, Sisters of Mercy, and 45 Grave? Post Punk Workout Mix Tape - 11/23/13

In the spirit of giving thanks this holiday season, I thank food for being so edible. And I thank music for helping motivate me to exercise. You'd think that the fear of obesity and all the subsequent health problems that can come from obesity would be all the motivation I need but it's not. Music is the only thing that makes exercise worthwhile. And this episode of Post Punk For Post Punks is dedicated specifically to the music most worthwhile to make exercise worthwhile.
